Situated in the Marketplace at Southern Shores, North Carolina, Baldie’s Burgers is a traditional burger stand that offers take-out lunch and dinner year round. Amongst an array of seafood joints on the Outer Banks, Baldie’s stands out with their mouthwatering cheeseburgers, overflowing chili dogs, and yummy frozen dessert items.
A co-worker and I visited the takeout only spot lunch for the first time and we were both pleasantly surprised by this hole in the wall restaurant. It’s the off-season and whether you’re a local or vacationing on the Outer Banks during this less busy time of year, it can be difficult to find a restaurant that’s open for dinner (not to mention lunch).
After a string of terrific meals at the fantastic restaurants near our office in Kitty Hawk like Rundown Cafe on beach road, we were both in the mood for something tasty… something that isn’t necessary healthy.
If you’re anything like me, then you feel a little guilty after eating something unhealthy for lunch – especially if the meal wasn’t delicious or satisfying. I’m happy to say, that not only did I lack the usual guilt for devouring a healthy portion of french fries and a juicy cheeseburger, it’s going to be hard to resist visiting Baldie’s every workday for lunch!
The French fries I ordered were hand-cut, lightly seasoned with salt, and had a great texture and crunch because the potato skin was left on the fries – which is exactly how fries should be!
My burger was thick and fully-cooked with no pink spots. It was severed on a lightly buttered and toasted bun that was perfectly portioned to the chunk of ground beef.
I dressed the gooey cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato and onion, and topped it off with some ketchup (I can’t have a burger without ketchup). Messy and oh so flavorful, I used several napkins while savoring my lunch.
We have a lot of strangely named restaurants here on the Outer Banks: Barefoot Bernie’s, Spanky’s Grille and the Bonzer Shack to name a few, and Baldie’s Burgers is pretty much out of left field too. I mean, I’ve never met someone named Baldie before, so what could this place be named after?
My curiosity got the better half of me and I had to inquire from the gentlemen who took my order. He said that the owner (Allan Schlobach) who is bald, put burgers and being bald together and volia! .
Maybe he was called “baldie” by someone right around the time he wanted to open a burger joint? I love a good story.
Baldie’s sells milks shakes, sundaes and soft-serve ice cream cones and although I haven’t experienced their dessert items yet, every online review I read about their cold menu items was positive and contained the word “yummy” when describing the taste.
In addition to having some of the best burgers, fries, hot dogs and milkshakes on the Outer Banks, Balide’s offers free delivery for order of $20 or more – you won’t get that at any chain burger joint on the beach!
Of course with any take-out burger restaurant, their food is incredibly reasonably priced (especially for the Outer Banks). You can grab a burger and fries for lunch and spend around $7… which isn’t bad if you ask me.
If you end up visiting Baldie’s Burgers (and I recommend you do), be sure to check out the pictures on the walls. The artwork is a shrine to bald folks like the owner – both men and women. These hairless icons include athletes, famous movie characters (Dr. Evil) and politicians (Rudy Giuliani).
